You have almost certainly been told to do more cardio and eat less. If that had been going to work, it would have worked by now. Here is what I did instead, in the order I did it. It took four weeks to get going and it did not hurt.

  1. 1

    Walk for fifteen minutes, indoors

In your living room. In socks. With something on television. This does not have to look like exercise, and for the first week it should not — the point is that you do it tomorrow as well.

If fifteen is too many, do eight. Eight minutes done beats thirty minutes planned.

  2. 2

Repeat it four or five times this week

Consistency is the only variable that has reliably mattered in anything I have read or tried. Every plan that failed me was a plan I could not repeat on a Wednesday when I was tired.

Missing a day is not falling off. It is a Tuesday.

  3. 3

    Add time, not intensity

Fifteen becomes twenty becomes forty across four weeks. Nothing asks you to jump. Nothing should leave you sore enough to skip the next day — soreness is not the measure of anything useful.

This is exactly what the free 4-week plan lays out, day by day.

  4. 4

Then add strength — two bands and a chair

Muscle and bone are what quietly change after menopause, and walking alone does not fully address either. Two resistance bands and a kitchen chair, twice a week, is where I started and it was enough to change things.

Strength comes fourth on purpose. Almost everyone tries to make it first, and almost everyone stops.
